Hypermiling Manual

Hypermiling-Manual is a personal study on the art of Hypermiling.

With oil prices at record levels, and the price of gas in the U.S at $4.00 a gallon, and in the U.K at £5.00 a gallon (Yes... that`s nearly $10.00), Hypermiling is becoming more and more popular.

For those who are new to Hypermiling, it is the art of driving your vehicle to its most economical levels, often exceeding the vehicle`s manufacturers fuel consumption figures.

There are hundreds of ways that this can be achieved. Practitioners of Hypermiling often achieve savings of 20% in their fuel consumption. It doesn`t take a genius to work out that for every 5 tanks of gas, you get one free.

Lets take a look at how this can easily be achieved....

Hypermiling Manual ... The art of beating the oil companies....

Hypermiling Manual Techniques

The Hypermiling Manual has thousands of gas saving techniques. I have put some of these techniques into practice, and yes..... it has made a MASSIVE impact on my fuel consumption.

My Vehicle is a 1.9L TDI VW (which is renowned for good gas milage anyway). Before practicing Hypermiling I was averaging 39.7 MPG. Using only a handful of techniques in the Hypermiling Manual my average fuel consumption is now 48.9 MPG. That is a 23.1% decrease in my fuel consumption.

In short.... that`s an extra 110.4 miles per tank of diesel.... =)

This is just one of the techniques I use regularly....

Another technique that is used regularly by Hypermilers is to put the car into neutral whilst on long downhill stretches of road. An engine Idling at 800RPM uses a lot less fuel than an engine under load at 2200RPM.

Get It?? ...... If Not..... You can get it here....

Hypermiling Manual Techniques 2

There are other techniques which I regularly practice...

1. I ALWAYS reverse into parking spaces ready to drive straight out of. Reversing on a warm engine uses alot less fuel than doing the same manouvre on a cold engine.

2. When starting my car, its engine started and away. I do not start my car and sit and wait. This follows the ZERO MPG rule seen in the previous video.

3. I accelerate smoothly, rather than banging my foot to the floor. Again , this uses alot less fuel than hard acceleration. I have heard of some people taking off their right shoe, as this helps smooth acceleration and better consumption..... maybe I`ll try that soon =)

4 .I always stick to the speed limits. This took alot of practice as i used to be a bit of a speed freak. Driving at 80 MPH uses approximately 15% more fuel than driving at 70 MPH. Also around town I use as high a gear as possible. Driving at 30MPH in fourth gear (or fifth if I can get away with it) uses alot less fuel than driving at 30MPH in third gear, as the engine is doing less RPM.

Hypermiling is not a crime...... The price of gas is !!!!

Hypermiling Manual Standards

There are standard procedures for Hypermilers...

These include..

1. Keep moving as long as possible.

2. Keep the A/C switched off.... A/C increases fuel consumption by upto 15%

3. Keep the windows up. This reduces drag on the vehicle. Less Drag = More MPG

4. If you driving a pick up, drive with the tailgate down, again, this reduces drag.

5. Keep tyre pressures at their correct levels. Incorrect tyre pressures sre one of the biggest causes of increased fuel consumption.

6. Don`t be afraid to be overtaken. This is going to happen ... ALOT !!

The Extremes Of Hypermiling

Whilst Hypermiling is good for the environment, and very good for the wallet, some people will take it to the extremes.

They will also put themselves at risk... please be careful....

Some things that Extreme Hypermilers practice are....

1. They switch off their engines on downhill stretches. Not a good idea as those minor things like your power steering and your brakes don`t work without the engine running. A LETHAL COMBINATION.

2. Slipstreaming Wagons on the motorway. As we all know, driving too close is dangerous. DON`T TRY IT !!

This next one I heard from a work colleague who regularly gets 75MPG out of his TDI Golf.
This is one I won`t be trying !!!

He wears sunglasses at night... He says that it is difficult to see where you are going properly, so you have to slow down!!!!!

INSANE !!!!
